Control Tower:

On April 13, 2000, Airport Manager Ron Wilsbach requested an "emergency JPA" (Joint Planning Agreement) from the Florida Department of Transportation.  The purpose was to fund construction of an Air Traffic Control Tower at the New Smyrna Beach Municipal Airport.  Mr. Wilsbach requested that this project "become our number one (1) priority" and that this "project will be on a fast track."  He closed the application by referring to the tower as an "urgent safety project."  Click here to read his application.

On October 21, 2004, at a cost of almost $1,000,000 in taxpayer money, a new Air Traffic Control Tower was activated.

Almost immediately Touch and Go training operations became much more prevalent.
